Is My Metabolism Broken? | Fully Alive — Chapter 4

If you’re over 50 and you’ve ever said – or even thought – “My metabolism is broken,” this episode is for you.

This week, I’m continuing my special Behind the Book series by reading Chapter 4 of my upcoming book: Fully Alive: A Blueprint for Building the Strongest, Healthiest, and Most Meaningful Second Half of Your Life.

And in this chapter, we’re tackling one of the biggest – and most discouraging – beliefs in the over-50 health and fitness world – that aging has somehow broken your metabolism.

Because let’s face it… it can certainly feel that way.

You eat less. You exercise more. You try harder. And somehow the strategies that worked at 30 or 40 don’t seem to work anymore.

So what happened?

In this chapter, I’ll explain why your metabolism isn’t some mysterious force conspiring against you – and why “broken” may be completely the wrong way to think about what’s happening inside your body.

Instead, we’ll explore a much more powerful idea –  Adaptation.

Your body is constantly responding to the environment you create and the signals you send it.

Years of restrictive dieting. Loss of muscle. Reduced activity. Poor sleep. Stress. Repeated cycles of losing and regaining weight. Your body notices all of it – and adapts accordingly.

But here’s the incredibly good news – adaptation works both ways.

The same body that adapted to years of restriction and inactivity can begin adapting to strength training, better nutrition, movement, recovery, and consistency.

Your body isn’t finished at 50. Or 60. Or 70.

It’s still listening.

In This Episode, You’ll Learn:

What metabolism actually is—and what it isn’t

Why having a “slow metabolism” is more complicated than most people realize

Why weight loss can become more difficult even when you’re eating less

How years of dieting can change the environment your body is responding to

Why muscle loss and declining activity matter so much after 50

The difference between metabolic damage and metabolic adaptation

Why the bathroom scale can convince you nothing is working—even when your health is improving

Why trying to force your body to lose weight may be the wrong approach

How strength training, movement, nutrition, recovery, and consistency send your body new signals

Why your goal isn’t to get your 25-year-old metabolism back

And why the body you have today may be far more capable of change than you’ve been led to believe

The big takeaway?

Stop asking “Is my metabolism broken?”

Start asking “What has my metabolism been responding to?”

Because once you stop treating your body like the enemy, you can begin creating an environment that encourages it to thrive.

And that’s where things get exciting.

📖 You’re Helping Me Write This Book!

Fully Alive is still being revised – and you’re getting to hear it before the final version goes to print. That means I want your feedback.

What resonated with you? What challenged something you believed? Was anything confusing? Did I leave something out? Do you have a story or experience that relates to this chapter?

Send me an email at coach@silveredgefitness.com.

I personally read your emails, and your feedback may help shape the final version of Fully Alive.

And if you know somebody who’s convinced their metabolism is broken, share this episode with them. They may not need another diet. They may simply need to understand that their body hasn’t betrayed them.

Thanks for being part of this journey with me.

Now let’s keep building the strongest, healthiest, most meaningful second half of our lives!
